The website has observed the trend is being coupled with an increase in people leaving it to the last possible moment to book a flight, with many using cheap broadband to snap up a bargain.

Mark Bower, lifestyle sales director at lastminute.com, said: "People are essentially not going to give up on their holiday. What they might do is look at potentially cutting back on the amount of time they go away.
"So looking at a two week holiday, more people are looking at one week holidays. Another thing that we are seeing is that people are really leaving it to the last minute now."
Just under one third of respondents to a Lastminute.com survey expected to go on a city break this year.
