That is the view of BlueSky, which has suggested that this will be the next major area of innovation in the mobile industry.

It observed that cheap broadband is now the accepted way to sort out holidays, but this could change to mobiles as technology advances.

While phones are already used to make cheap international calls on holiday, they could also become the most popular way to arrange a break.

Mark Fallon, managing director of BlueSky, said: "The enrichment of the web and also the content that is on it, is making that whole booking experience on the web so much more pleasurable and interesting for the consumer.

"You are going so see more and more mobile access being added to that as well. People going to be able to access their bookings via mobile devices and that is where the leading innovation is going to go."
