Cheap broadband as 'essential as water and electricity'

Microsoft has suggested that people are just as likely to cancel their bills for these utilities as they are their cheap broadband deals.
It claimed that the economic downturn is not having an adverse effect on the broadband industry, which is continuing to grow.

Ashley Highfield, managing director and vice-president of consumer and online UK at Microsoft, said that other technology areas are suffering though.
"What's suffering in homes is that people are starting to spin down from the most expensive subscription TV packages. What they're not doing is spinning down from broadband," he stated.
"There has been no evidence so far, and I don't believe there will be, of anyone giving up broadband anymore than anyone's going to give up water or electricity."
In 2007, the average household spend on communications services each month was £93.63, Ofcom figures revealed.
