Universal charger for cheap pay as you go mobiles planned
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs. Providers of price comparison for cheap international calls.Plans have been announced by the biggest cheap pay as you go mobile phone makers in the world to introduce a universal phone charger.
The new charger will work on nearly every mobile phone and it is expected to be compatible with the majority of handsets by 2012.
Firms such as T-Mobile, Orange, 3 and Vodafone have welcomed the move, along with Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.
Pay As You Go - Great Savings
It will result in a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of stand-by energy consumed, compared to today's models.
Michael O'Hara, marketing director at industry group, the GSM Association (GSMA), said: "This is a broad agreement that will move the industry to a single, energy-efficient charger for all mobile phones."
It has been estimated by the GSMA that 51,000 tonnes of old chargers could be eliminated once the universal charger is introduced.
There had previously been pressure to take such measures by groups including the European Commission.
