Cheap broadband 'up to speeds fairest way'
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.BT has claimed that the best way a broadband supplier can advertise its service speed is by including an 'up to' speed.
This measures the maximum speed of the service, despite many people receiving far slower cheap broadband deals than this advertised speed.
Ofcom has revealed that the average UK speed is less than half of that advertised.
However, a BT spokesman told the Daily Mail that "numerous factors, including the house's distance from an exchange, the internal wiring in that house, the condition of the copper" all play a part in determining the broadband speed it receives.

"The physics involved means speeds will vary considerably from house to house and that poses challenges for every internet service provider," he said.
"BT believes that advertising speeds of 'up to' is the most appropriate approach as speeds can reach that level, but that there also needs to be a speed check before a sale takes place."
He added that more than 90 per cent of the company's customers are satisfied with their services.
The fastest services are received by residents in London.
