UK 'falling behind' on cheap broadband

A new fibre-optic network is needed to help Britain move forward in areas such as entertainment, health and business, according to the chief scientist at Microsoft Research Cambridge.
Professor Christopher Bishop, who is also a professor at Edinburgh University, commented that the lack of a fibre-optic network is "beginning to have serious consequences".

"If we are looking for a government project that would stimulate the economy in the short term and help combat the impact of the credit crunch, while also bringing long-lasting improvements to the nation's infrastructure, then we could do no better than rewire the nation with fibre optics," he stated.
Many people are turning to their cheap pay as you go mobiles as an alternative to using home broadband, with a report from Opera claiming that the mobile web is increasing in availability as well as influence.
