'Long way to go' for pay as you go mobiles as digital platforms

While use of mobiles as a digital platform is increasing, there is still a "long way to go", according to Spectrum Mobile.
However, there has been a huge increase in use of cheap O2 handsets and other models as digital platforms, with Helen Whittle, manager at the media and telecoms strategy consulting service, citing "improving performance".

"There's still a way to go on the mobile platform. It's still not mass market with the exception of Japan and Korea, potentially. Across the board, very small numbers were actually receiving mobile content."
"Another area would be to increase engagement with youth audiences."
More multimedia messages are no being sent than at any other time, with almost 250,000 more messages every day compared to 2007, a Mobile Data Association report has found.
Multimedia messages were up by 20 per cent in the third quarter, reaching a figure of 45,364,272 during the third quarter of 2008.
