This is despite people having less spare money this year due to the economic downturn, according to Lonely Planet.
Many Brits may shop for others back home and make low cost international calls to check on gift choices.

Tom Hall, editor of Lonely Planet, suggested that rather than cancel trips, people will look for ways to save money while they are away.
"I think people are possibly thinking in as savvy a way as they can, where they can go to get the best deals, the best prices, and if they have a few days holiday thrown in, then so much the better," he said.
"The emphasis is on finding somewhere to go that you get good value."
A shopping guide released this year by Post Office Travel Services has found that shopping in New York can be 17 per cent cheaper than in London.
