Home broadband 'needs spam protection'

Spam is being sent to email accounts and even social networking accounts with increasing regularity, but cheap broadband users can use a number of methods to protect against it, according to security firm Sophos.
Carole Theriault, senior security consultant for Sophos, commented that security patches, anti-virus software and firewalls can all help ensure people gain maximum enjoyment from the internet.

"Spam is motivated by money. So long as they [spammers] make money then they will continue spamming," she stated.
"Nothing's free. If it seems too good to be true then it probably is."
Research from the firm found that one new spam-related webpage is discovered every 20 seconds and Facebook is one of a number of new targets for spammers.
A MessageLabs Intelligence Report revealed in May 2008 that 76.8 per cent of email traffic from new sources was spam.
