Gordon Brown has been forced to make low-cost international calls as he flew to countries such as France, visiting Paris three times in the last eight weeks.
He has headed abroad seven times in the last eight weeks and aides back in the UK have had to make cheap calls to the US and other locations to get hold of him.

However, he has been hailed as the architect of economic revival in this period, which suggests that taking a break from the UK can do anybody the world of good.
The New Statesman has suggested the prime minister could be set to experience a "Brown Bounce" and has had a boost over David Cameron in the polls.
Steve Richards of the magazine stated: "It reflects a political mood unrecognisable from the one that prevailed only a few weeks ago."
While a general election in the UK is yet to be called, the US election takes place tomorrow.
