Travellers on gap years who are taking time out from their studies could use a new internet tool to find out more about their destination.
Lonely Planet and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have joined together to create a service that is available through Google, which provides photographs of areas being visited.
People on gap years may be likely to make cheap calls to international mobiles to catch up with fellow travellers and arrange meeting points.
The new service will provide podcasts and texts on locations so good spots can be chosen in advance.
The FCO's Alice Draper stated: "The very nature of a gap year means that it is likely to be a prolonged trip, taking in a number of destinations.
"This can increase travellers' risk of encountering difficulties on their journey, so it is vital to prepare properly before setting off."
Travel insurance has been described as "a must" for gap years by a travel firm.
