'Passport needed' for cheap pay as you go mobiles

The government has revealed it intends to follow the lead of other European nations and make registering all mobile phones compulsory.
This would create a huge database of information that could be used to prevent crime, which some analysts are suggesting could lead to more 'Big Brother' style surveillance in the UK.
People wanting money saving Pay As You Go phones could be most inconvenienced as these items are often bought on the spur of the moment.
A spokeswoman for the information commissioner Richard Thomas told the Sunday Times that an official announcement is due soon.
"With regards to the database that would contain details of all mobile users, including Pay As You Go, we would expect that this information would be included in the database proposed in the draft Communications Data Bill," she said.
Currently, there are more than 40 million Pay As You Go mobiles in the UK.
