More cheap calls to international mobiles expected from emerging markets

Emerging markets will account for two thirds of the global mobile phone market by 2013.

A study of 34 emerging market countries published by Tariff Consultancy found that the current number of 2.1 billion users is likely to double in five years.

As well as making an increasing number of domestic calls, emerging markets are also expected to see the number of cheap calls to international mobiles grow.

China and India will remain the largest markets, but the likes of Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia and Cambodia are all likely to see an explosion in mobile phone usage in the next five years.

Margrit Sessions, managing director of Tariff Consultancy said: "The rapid growth of mobile penetration across the world indicates that these markets will approach maturity more quickly than previously thought.

"By the end of 2013 we are likely to see one SIM card for every person as the norm in most countries.

"However we should be careful to over-emphasise the significance of this trend, as the incidence of multiple SIM ownership – particularly in cities – has long been common in emerging markets."

She added that she expected mobile broadband to also increase in developing countries.

Iraq is expected to have the highest mobile penetration of all the 34 countries by 2013 including cheap Pay As You Go mobiles.
