Mobiles used to track shopping habits
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs. Providers of price comparison for cheap international calls.Mobile phones are being used to track the buying habits of shoppers, it has been revealed.
A company from the UK, Path Intelligence, has used new technology that can pinpoint where a mobile phone is to see how long shoppers spend in stores and whether this affects their buying habits.
It found that for every one per cent increase of time in-store, the amount spent grew by 1.3 per cent, the BBC reports.
However, the ability to use an anonymous identifier that transmits from mobile phones could be used in more far-reaching ways, from security to improving services.
Toby Oliver, Path Intelligence's chief executive said: "The real problem is that it's been hard to quantitatively analyse this. People say, 'you know, I think this is the case' but what we're able to do now is put some numbers behind those behavioural effects."
People making low-cost international calls to let others know where they are may already be being tracked by the technology. However, the system is completely anonymous and doesn't require any network information.
More than 11 million people in the UK now use cheap broadband to do their shopping, research has shown.
