3 makes free applications deal

UK mobile operator 3 has made a deal with GetJar to provide users with a library of free applications.

GetJar is one of the world's largest mobile application portals and 3 will be offering free services including Google Maps as part of the partnership.

Other applications available are Yahoo!Go, eBuddy, Nimbuzz, MyWaves and many others.

Ilja Laurs, GetJar's founder and chief executive, commented: "3 is known for innovative services, and providing 3 customers with access to the best and most popular free applications is an important step for the mobile industry.

"GetJar's huge library of mobile applications will play a crucial role in satisfying customer demand and driving revenue for 3."

Currently averaging 14 million downloads per month, GetJar has had more than 300 million downloads from its website in two years.

Mei Lin Ng, co-founder and vice president of marketing for mig33, one of the applications being offered for free as part of the deal, said: "It's great to see market leaders partnering together, and helping to pave the way for a more open, mobile internet."
