With the Olympic Games being held in the same city and finishing just two weeks ago, some sports fans will be making even more cheap calls to China as they get the latest from friends in the Far East.
The three-hour opening ceremony takes place at 12:50 BST in the Bird's Nest and is expected to be a spectacular affair, with 150 countries taking part.
The Beijing Olympics was an unprecedented success but organiser Wang Wei is confident this event can match it.
"We present two Games of equal splendour as a solemn commitment to the entire world," she said.
There will be 20 events contested in total over the course of the Games, with Britain sending a team of 206 athletes.
Following so many gold medals in the Olympics, Team GB is being urged "to scrap for third place" in the Paralympics medal table.
