Asda pay-as-you-go prices halved
Asda has gone against the current trend for Pay As You Go tariffs and halved its own charges. The supermarket is set to slash flat-rate calls to eight pence from 16 pence, while text messages will drop from five pence to four pence from September 1st.
With 150,000 mobile customers, Asda has claimed it is now Britain's top provider of cheap mobile deals, with rivals including Ikea being overtaken by the supermarket.
Craig Thirkell, buying manager for Asda Mobile, stated: "We've been working on this [phone offer] since we saw the downturn in the economy. We wanted to offer a transparent tariff with no hidden costs as customers are strapped for cash."
Traditional mobile operators such as Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange have been increasing prices in the face of the economic downturn, but less conventional operators are managing to give cut price deals.
Owned by US giant Walmart, Asda is currently engaged in a price war with other British supermarkets as they compete to provide the best value in areas such as petrol as well as mobile phones.
