Mobile broadband affecting fixed line sales
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. Just as the cheap international calls available on mobiles has reduced the popularity of home phones, mobile broadband is now affecting business for fixed line ISPs, research has shown.
One in eight mobile broadband users are now using their phones rather than pay out for a landline connection for the internet as well, a YouGov report has revealed.
However, almost two thirds of customers are still using mobile internet as an accessory to their normal home broadband connection.
Marek Vaygelt, head of technology and telecommunications consulting at YouGov, commented: "Customers find mobile broadband easy to use and install but transmission speeds and, to a lesser extent, network coverage reduce the initial enjoyment of getting up and running.
"It is in these areas that fixed ISPs have a distinct advantage and need to concentrate their marketing effort to minimise customer loss."
Dongle sales have increased significantly, with sales growing from 69,000 to 133,000 per month between February and June.
UK homes are doing without landline phones more and more, with 12 per cent of residences now relying solely on their mobile phones.
