Mobile buyers shun high -street for the internet

In-store sales of mobile phones dropped by 50 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, new research from GfK NOP has indicated.
Orange are still intending to open more stores, with sixty planned to open within the next year, but other phone operators are cutting back on store expansions in the face of falling high-street profits.
E-commerce industry group IMRG's head of operations, David J Smith, commented that shops are being used less to buy, but are still useful for providing information and brand recognition to consumers.
"Customers will often research a deal or product online, then go into the store to discuss or look at it before buying online," he said.
Orange's total customer base reached 15.7 million in the first half of the year, with contract customers up 13 per cent to 5.8 million.
