Mobile phones can make robots
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs. Providers of price comparison for cheap international calls.Mobile phones can help in the production of robots, according to university students in Southampton.
Using electronics that are usually involved in operating mobile phones' vibrate function, robots that are capable of running autonomously for more than two hours can be produced.
The robots, which can be made for just £24, are to be presented at the European conference on Artificial Life in Winchester tomorrow by Alexis Johnson and four other students from the University of Southampton's School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS).
Zauner who teaches Biorobotics at ECS, commented: "This is truly exciting: now we can order robots from the same UK companies that regularly make circuit boards for our projects - for them it is just a circuit board they can mass-produce like any other, but actually it is a complete functional robot.
"This also poses important research questions: how can we maintain and control thousands of robots?"
While mobile phones are used to make cheap international calls, they are increasingly proving worthwhile in technology, with a microscope recently being designed to fit inside a mobile.
