News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Parents across the UK are being urged to watch exactly what their children use cheap broadband for this summer holiday.
A survey from YouGov has found that 84 per cent of parents rely on verbal agreements as the best way to monitor their internet use.
However, Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, who carried out the survey, believes that more protection is needed as there are both safety and financial issues at stake.
"Children are often more tech-savvy than their parents and the click of a mouse can take them anywhere," he said.
"This research highlights the need for parents to be aware of the simple checks they can put in place to safeguard children who are increasingly using the internet to build new relationships."
The poll found that 40 per cent of 11-16-year-olds use cheap broadband to visit social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo more than any other purpose.
One expert recently called social networking the 'malls and playgrounds of 2008".
