Mobile internet use up 25 per cent
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs. Providers of price comparison for cheap international calls.The number of people accessing the internet from their mobile phones has increased to 16.5 million in May 2008, new figures have revealed.
This represents a 25 per cent rise in the past two years and equates to 4,500 new users every day, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).
Mobile phones are still being used for cheap international calls, but are also now becoming "pocketable tools" for communication, with 20 per cent further growth predicted for next year.
However, Steve Reynolds, chairman of the MDA, believes mobile internet could grow further if there was more transparency in its pricing. Unlike with cheap international calls, prices are not clearly stated, causing confusion.
"The MDA is calling for greater price transparency on the costs associated with [mobile internet use]," he said.
"The findings of this report suggest a real consumer appetite, but confusion and fear over costs may be holding back growth."
With text messaging also on the up 142 million are sent from UK mobiles every day - the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has warned users about the risk of Text Message Injury.
