Mobiles to be allowed on planes
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs. Providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. As well as making cheap international calls when touching down in a new country, people in the UK could soon be using their mobiles in the air, a new ruling has indicated.
Ofcom, the communications watchdog, has decided it will grant licences for mobile communications on aircrafts, in a move that could see airlines make bigger profits by charging for calls in the air.
An Ofcom statement explained that it "will be talking to all concerned parties to understand what steps can be taken to ensure consumers understand the costs of making calls from on board an aircraft".
Calls will not be permitted when planes are flying below 3,000 feet and will only cover European Union-registered planes, in their airspace.
The possibility of air-rage increasing due to mobile phone use is also mentioned in the report, which states that safety will remain "of paramount importance".
Two British women were arrested in a recent air rage incident after they tried to open a cabin door while flying from Kos to Manchester.
