iPlayer a big hit for broadband customers
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Customers subscribing to Virgin Media have watched 10.5 million shows on the BBC iPlayer online through the cable company's television service.
Last month, Virgin Media's digital television platform launched the catch-up service and has seen huge demand, with Eastenders and Doctor Who among the shows most watched by the firm's 3.5 million customers.
The free download service is available on cheap broadband through the BBC's website and Virgin Media run the service in high-quality, full screen mode.
While the iPlayer has been a runaway success using broadband, Rahul Chakkara, BBC controller for TV platforms, believes these latest figures show it has multi-platform potential.
"These early figures indicate a real appetite from viewers to access BBC iPlayer via their TVs and catch-up on their favourite programmes from the comfort of their living room," he said.
"This initial success on Virgin Media underlines the multi-platform appeal of BBC iPlayer proposition."
The BBC has appointed a new director to oversee the iPlayer, with Erik Huggers taking over as director of the future media and technology division.
