Radiohead's internet album nominated for prestigious award
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals. In Rainbows, the highly controversial and equally acclaimed album by Radiohead, has been nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize, with the winner set to be announced in September.
The album was released as a free download last year and was only available for customers using cheap broadband to download the record from the band's website.
The idea of using an online honesty box to release an album was greeted with skepticism by record labels and the capabilities of broadband services dealing with demand was also questioned, but In Rainbows has gone on to be one of the year's biggest sellers.
Other nominations include young female singer-songwriters Laura Marling and Adele, who garnered followings on the internet before making strides in the mainstream charts.
Last year the prize, which solely champions UK music, was won by Klaxons as Mercury judges described their album Myths of the Near Future as an "ecstatic musical adventure".
Previous recipients of the award include Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal, while all nominees can expect to receive a surge in interest and record sales.
