New technique could speed super-fast broadband
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.A new technique which allows the replacement of old copper cable with fibre optic cable at one fifth the cost of traditional methods, could speed the deployment of super-fast broadband.
Kabel-X, a method which cuts costs of replacing copper cable with fibre and speeds the process up five fold, could be deployed in the UK.
The method involves injecting a liquid into ducts, allowing cables to be removed without damaging the housing, which can then be used for fibre-optic cables.
Austria and Germany are already using the technique and if borught in to the UK, it could see BT's planned £1.5 billion investment in bringing super-fast broadband to ten million homes achieve its aims more quickly.
According to Simon MacDonald, founding partner of the company in the UK, told the Times: "Kabel-X works best in urban areas where the cost and disruption of digging will be very high."
BT would be installing the infrastructure, which it claims could even deliver speeds of up to 1Gb per second, but other operators are likely to use the cables as well.
