BT to lay down super-fast broadband fibre
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Super-fast broadband could be a reality for UK homes, as infrastructure construction by BT has been given a £1.5 billion boost.
The telecoms firm has announced the added investment into laying fibre networks which it estimates will reach ten million homes by 2012.
According to the company, the connections will give broadband users 100Mbps access to start with, though in future the fibre-optic cables could deliver speeds of 1Gbps.
And BT said that it would make the upgraded infrastructure available to other broadband firms, such as those that provide home broadband deals through skinttariffs.com.
However, Virgin Media, which also offers deals through skinttariffs.com, already uses fibre optic cables, and has claimed to have a head start on BT.
A Virgin media spokesperson said: "BT's announcement endorses Virgin Media's long-held view that superfast broadband is what people want."
The popularity of sites such as YouTube and the massive use of the BBC's iPlayer has raised the possibility that networks would struggle for bandwidth.
