Text costs from EU to drop
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. Mobile phone customers who travel to the EU and want to send a text back, will soon see their bills slashed.
The EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reading announced that she expected a cut in the charge of a roaming text to drop by 70 per cent by 2009.
Customers who wish to call back home from abroad can already make cheap international calls to the UK from their holiday or business destination using skinttariff.co.uk access codes.
The new regulation could see their texting costs drop as well from the average of around 0.29 (23p), a figure Ms Reding would like to see drop to 0.12.
She said: "By the 1st of July 2009 on the latest, I expect the roaming II regulation to reduce the price of sending an SMS abroad by 70% for consumers in the EU."
The EU's decision last year to put a cap on roaming charges for voice calls proved popular.
