Google announces new online world
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.A new online world has been launched by Google that allows broadband users to decorate virtual rooms, play with friends and even hide away on desert islands.
The "virtual experience" is called Lively and is expected to rival existing online worlds like Second Life, but has the advantage of being free to use and not needing any extra software to be downloaded.
Google engineering manager Niniane Wang thinks the simplicity of Lively, as well as its ability to tie in with other Google features like YouTube, will set it apart.
"Our intent is to be part of the users' everyday experience. We designed it to be easy to use," she said.
Meanwhile, Second Life has advanced its game by announcing "universal avators" that can travel between virtual worlds, in a measure that is sure to require high-speed broadband.
Second Life's blog stated: "This is a historic day for Second Life and for virtual worlds in general marking the first time an avatar has moved from one virtual world to another."
