Vodafone buys phone company in Ghana
Vodafone has increased its grip on the mobile phone business after buying a 70 per cent stake in Ghana Telecommunications Company Ltd (Ghana Telecom).
The deal is worth $900 million (£450 million) and sees the company take control of Ghana's biggest fixed line provider, in a move that could lead to more cheap international calls to the country.
Vodafone chief executive Arun Sarin is hopeful the new market will lead to more success for the firm, with the African market expected to experience a boom in mobile phone use.
"Ghana is one of the most attractive markets in Africa with mobile subscribers growing at more than 55 per cent per annum and mobile penetration around 35 per cent," he said.
"We expect that our investment will generate substantial benefits for Vodafone and for the Ghanaian economy and we are delighted that we will be working in partnership with the Government of Ghana."
Many shops, hairdressers and bars double up as mobile phone voucher sellers in Africa as the service there becomes more reliable and an influx of tourists leads to more cheap international calls.
