News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Bank customers who are the victims of internet fraud should be protected by legislation which makes the bank liable, according to a new report.
As the use of the internet for shopping and banking soars, so criminals are getting more adept at targeting internet users to commit identity theft or fraud.
Under existing rules, customer reports any such incidents to their banks instead of the police, and customers often do not receive compensation.
However, the House of Lords' Science and Technology Committee has called for banks to be held liable for customers' losses.
The committee also claimed that the government had made "slow progress" on addressing internet crime and that the "indifference" had only come to an end as a result of high profile and embarrassing data losses.
An original report was published in August of last year, but a follow up released today (July 7th) revealed that minsters "were able to offer a slightly more positive view of how the committee's recommendations were to be taken forward".
