8k pre-pay dongles sold a week
Pre-pay mobile USB modems which allow users to connect to the internet while on the move through mobile phone networks have seen a boom in sales.Figures from GfK revealed that sales of pre-pay USB modems, or dongles, are up to 8,000 a week in the UK.
The actual dongles cost around £50 each, with various different packages available via prepayment. It is possible to get online for as little as £10.
Cheaper packages have the same download and upload speed as the faster ones, with the difference between deals down to the download limit available.
The new figures mark a significant surge in the number of sales from the beginning of the year, when there were only 1,000 pre-pay dongles sold a week.
Since then, non-specialist retailers such as Woolworths have also started selling the dongles.
Mobile operator 3, which offers deals through skinttariffs.com is the leader in the pre-pay dongle market.
