In-fight internet access landsPassengers on American Airlines planes are set to test a new in-flight internet access system.
Two flights to and from New York have started trialling the technology which, if successful could be rolled out across the fleet.
People on holiday in the states can make cheap international calls to their relatives back in the UK. Passengers on the American Airlines flights could find out how to make those cheap calls from the skinttariffs.com website.
The airline is looking for ways to raise funds against a backdrop of rising fuel prices.
It is hoped that passengers will buy access to the internet for between $9.95 and $12.95 depending on the length of the flight, though passengers will be able to benefit for free from the technology on flights from John F Kennedy airport in New York to Los Angeles.
Other experiments have seen airlines offer passengers mobile phone connectivity. While the airlines have not completely abandoned these plans, one that trialled in-flight calls has since withdrawn the service.
