49m mobile-enabled laptops by 2013
The number of mobile laptops is set to grow rapidly, reaching 49 million across Europe by 2013, according to Berg Insight.According to the analysis firm, there were 8.4 million in 2007 but that number looks to rise about six times over the next five years.
However, while the growth will mean that more people will access the internet over mobile broadband on the move, it will not mark the end of the home-based fixed-line broadband, as it will have higher speeds.
And, the growth of mobile broadband affects internet service providers (ISPs) in two ways, according to Tobias Ryberg, senior analyst.
He said: On the one hand they have a highly attractive proposition a novel mobile service with high ARPU. On the other hand, the very popularity of the service stretches the mobile network infrastructure to its utmost limit threatening to degrade the level of service for all subscribers.
