Met Office reaches out to mobile phones
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. Mobile phone users will soon be able to get weather forecasts direct from the Met Office to their handsets.
The state agency plans to "significantly" boost its revenues by becoming a content provider.
From a studio in Millbank, the Met Office will send out tailored and live packaged video content of meteorological predictions which can be streamed to 3G handsets.
This means that as well as using their mobile phone to make cheap international calls from their mobile phone handset, users will be able to carry out a three dimensional "fly through" of a weather map.
This step increases the number of services which 3G phone owners can make use of.
Already they can surf the internet, where they could find the weather for themselves, synchronise their calendar with workmates, check their email and even navigate their way around cities with GPS systems.
However, it will be the first time the Met Office directly reaches out to consumers.
