Broadband adoption drives internet TV
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals. With high speed broadband connections proliferating in UK homes, the number of users visiting online video or television websites has skyrocketed, according to a new report.
According to research from eMarketer, 62.6 per cent of households have broadband access to the internet.
This figure is set to rise further to around 74 per cent in four years time, according to the report Television in Europe: an Expanding Scene.
Karin von Abrams, senior analyst and author of the report, claimed that as broadband adoption spreads the uptake of online media streaming or download services such as the BBC's iPlayer will increase.
She said: "Already in the first half of 2008, over one-half of UK adults with internet access have watched TV online, and many have used it to catch programmes they had missed."
Some broadband providers have called for the BBC to shoulder the cost of upgrading the internet infrastructure following the massive popularity of its online media player.
