UK's towns get higher broadband speeds
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals. The UK's towns receive higher broadband speeds than rural areas on average, according to a new analysis.
While industry regulator Ofcom reported last month that the digital divide between rural and urban had been bridged, the new study suggests that as far as broadband speeds, the gap is still there.
The new study by thinkbroadband.com tested the speed of broadband connection in 6,000 locations.
An average speed of 3.2 megabits per second (Mbps) across all those locations masked regional differences. While Londoners on average had access to the internet at 4.5 Mbps, connections in Northern Ireland were lagging behind with speeds of 2.3 Mbps.
Ofcom's report showed a higher proportion of households with broadband access.
Bud thinkbroadband.com's Andrew Ferguson said that figure alone did not mark the end of the digital divide.
This survey shows us rural Britain may have a higher proportion of broadband homes but those homes are getting a slower service," he said.
