Phones to 'replace wallets in 2 years'
Wallets will be replaced by mobile phones in two years, a mobile chip manufacturer has claimed. The humble handset has come a long way from the days when it was referred to as a brick and Qualcomm claims its future versions will see it become the only thing people have to carry in their pocket.
Its BREW platform will allow UK customers to keep abreast of their finances by giving them access to their bank accounts online.
And customers will be able to make payments with the device, which they will tap against readers in a similar way to the way the London transport system’s Oyster card works.
“Financial services are to become part of the wireless landscape,” said the company’s chief executive Paul Jacobs in a speech in San Diego.
So, as well as making cheap international calls on their mobile phones, customers will be able to make purchases and leave the clutter of change at home.
