In-flight mobile calls divide airlines
The issue of whether to allow airline passengers to make cheap international calls or calls at all for that matter is dividing the airlines.A survey carried out by The Times revealed that five airlines have decided to trial technology that would allow passengers to make calls from their mobile phones while in flight.
Air France, Ryanair, Bmi, SAS and Emirates are all carrying out trials on giving passengers the ability to update loved ones on their arrival times, keep up to date with business or simply gossip.
But the idea of in-flight chit chat is not universally popular. Qatar Airways went as far as installing the technology, but then decided to ban in-flight mobile calls after a survey revealed that 80 per cent of passengers did not want it.
Balancing the convenience of making calls home or to friends still in the destination they left, was the possibility of listening to other people's conversations and poor choice of annoying ringtones.
