Broadband divide 'still there'
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals. The broadband divide has not closed, as reported by Ofcom, according to a rural business organisation.
While the Ofcom report issued last week suggested that a greater proportion of rural households had access to broadband than urban homes, the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) said the suggestion "beggars belief".
CLA deputy president William Worsley told ZDNet: "Suggestions that the broadband divide has closed are simply not true."
He said that people who read the Ofcom report would get a false impression of the state of affairs in rural broadband.
"Everything is not rosy with broadband in the countryside, despite Ofcom's wanton optimism," he added.
Ofcom has stood by its report, which claimed that 59 per cent of rural homes had broadband access compared to 57 per cent of urban homes.
An Ofcom spokesperson did acknowledge that there could be other divides still at work such as the speed of broadband in the different areas.
