Rural Britain has more broadband than cities
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Houses in rural Britain are more likely to have broadband than their urban counterparts, according to Ofcom.
A report from the telecommunications regulator revealed that 59 per cent of rural homes are connected to the internet by broadband compared to 57 per cent of urban dwellings.
The figures represent a reversal of the usual trend, which had seen connectivity among urban homes to be greater.
Ed Richards, Ofcom's Chief Executive, said "Our report highlights a closing of the geographical digital divide in the UK. Rural households are today as well connected to broadband as their urban neighbours."
But the city average also masks a great disparity, with Sunderland recording 66 per cent broadband usage compared with 32 per cent in Glasgow.
Technology has been introduced into rural areas in a bid to help isolated communities remain economically viable, the result of which has seen 62 per cent of homes in the Scottish Highlands connected.
