91% of internet connections are broadband
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.More than nine out of ten of the internet connections in the UK are now via a broadband line, according to new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
In March 91.6 per cent of all connections were broadband connections, suggesting that broadband is boosting its penetration and take up among the British public.
The figure represents an 83.6 per cent increase on the year before.
Dial-up connections are significantly slower than broadband access, which can be secured through a phone line or by cable connections with providers such as VirginMedia.
Only 8.34 connections are still dial-up with the ONS noting that "as the proportion of slower speed connections has decreased, the proportion of higher speed connections has increased".
The proportion of higher speed connections also went up, with 50.5 per cent of broadband connections advertised as offering downloads at between 2Mb and 8Mb, compared with 47.1 per cent in Decemer 2007 and 35.1 per cent a year before that.
