Ofcom deregulates 70% wholesale broadband
Telecommunications regulator Ofcom has announced that it is to deregulate parts of the broadband market. The decision, which will deregulate almost 70 per cent of the UK wholesale broadband, is intended to create a more level playing field for providers to compete on.
Following the regulatioin it will become easier for providers such as TalkTalk or Sky to have unbundled networks on their own, so that their customers do not have to rely on BT infrastructure.
The plans will make it easier for customer's to change broadband provider and sign up with providers that are not BT.
Ofcom has suggested that the change will allow other big providers to sell broadband services to smaller providers, which will boost competition and bring broadband prices down.
However Rob Barnes of Moneysupermarket.com said that the regulator should focus less on deregulation and more on fixing regional pricing structures.
