Yachtsman found by tracing phone
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. A yachtsman who was presumed lost at sea was found unharmed after rescuers tracked his mobile phone.
An international search involving coastguards in France, the UK and the Channel Islands had been searching for the man, whose wife told the coastguards she had been unable to contact him.
The yachtsman was found five miles from his departure point of Torpoint in Cornwall.
He had planned to reach the Channel Islands but instead was located moored in the River Yealm.
Using his mobile phone, the Martime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) pinpointed his location.
A spokesperson for the MCA reminded people going out on the seas to tell friends or family if they were changing their plans.
While the yachtsman was found unharmed, it could have been a relief to other boat owners to know that as well as enabling them to make cheap international calls, their handset could act as a beacon, attracting rescuers to them in an emergency.
