News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Cable broadband operator Virgin Media, which offers deals through skinttariffs.com, is set to boost the speed of its network.
The firm, which already operates the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, has completed tests of a bandwidth-boosting kit.
Virgin used Nortel's 40100G Adaptive Optics Engine to increase its capacity on a 10G network fourfold.
The trial on the 217-mile stretch of fibre between London and Manchester was successful and could see Virgin become the first operator to offer 40Gb services.
Daniel Hennessy, director of technical architecture at Virgin Media, said in a statement: "Our aim for this trial was to ensure we continue to meet the growing capacity needs of the high-speed services we deliver and provide a quality experience for Virgin Media customers."
He added: "Our strategic suppliers have demonstrated very clearly how existing network assets can be scaled to meet the growth in demand associated with evolving customer behaviour and step changes in the products provided as part of our high-speed broadband proposition."
