A study by research firm Nielsen Mobile revealed that about 810,000 mobile subscribers visited sites such as Facebook and MySpace while on the go in the first three months of 2008.
This represented 1.7 per cent of UK mobile phone owners, a figure slightly above other European countries where 1.6 per cent accessed the sites, totalling 4.1 million users, in December of last year.
Of the social networking sites, MySpace proved the most popular with mobile internet users, with 2.8 million at the end of last year
"Social networking is already a global phenomenon, and going mobile is the next big thing," said Jeff Herrmann, vice president of mobile media at Nielsen Mobile.
"In the UK and the US especially, we already see millions of users of MySpace, Facebook and other social networks interacting with their virtual spaces while on the go."
