Mobile calls get encryption
A UK start up has developed technology that will make all phone calls including fixed-line, mobile and cheap international calls resistant to deliberate snooping.Cellcrypt, run by former sales head of Psion Claes Bergstedt, is looking to raise millions of pounds to perfect the technology and has been seeking security clearance from the US and UK.
Now it is looking for funds to launch itself on the market targeting governments or businesses with an interest in protecting valuable information.
Other encryption systems include the purchasing of hardware devices.
By contrast, Cellcrypt offers a way of encrypting calls over voice over internet protocol, which can be used by people with mobile phone handsets that have Wi-Fi compatibility or can access wireless broadband themselves.
The new security system allows people to make secure calls simply by installing software on their mobile handset.
"If you access your bank online it's safe but if you use your phone it seems to be fair game," said Mr Bragstedt. "Why should people treat the call differently?"
