China has largest internet population

China now has the world's largest internet population, according to government data.
The booming Asian country has 221 million people online, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
Prior to the announcement, the US had been considered the largest internet audience with 216 million users by the end of 2007.
However, as a percentage of the population, the US is still ahead, with 71 per cent using the internet compared to just 17 per cent in China.
And users of the internet in China do not have the freedom that broadband users in the West have with access to many sites banned, including material deemed subversive or pornographic.
China has also overtaken the US in the adoption of mobile telephony, passing the 520 million subscribers mark recently and heading for 600 million.
Meanwhile it has been revealed that there are 100 million broadband users in Europe, which is over 20 per cent more than in the US and Canada combined.
