IBM adds functions to mobile handsets

As mobile phone handsets become increasingly ubiquitous and their access to the web improves, IBM has realised that it is time to get in on the act and has developed a range of programs for the mobile handset user.
Mobile phone consumers, who can make cheap international calls with skinttariffs.com access codes, will soon be able to benefits from IBM's universal translator, social networking and health care applications.
IBM is developing programmes so that people who speak no common language can still communicate thanks to instant translation technology on their mobile phone.
The firm is also looking into helping people carry their social networking lives with them as they go mobile.
One final application is a system that would enable phones to be used in emergency situations for example by getting information about local hospitals or chemists.
