Over 70 million phone connections exist in the UK, following the addition of 4.1 net additions in 2007.

While the UK population reached almost 61 million in 2007, the number of phone connections was almost ten million more than the amount of people.

The growth rate jumped to 6.2 per cent to 2.1 per cent marking a growing appetite for communications on the go.

Penetration – that is how much of a population a product has reached – was already at 110.1 per cent in 2006 but it jumped to 116.5 per cent in 2007.

Vodafone, which offers deals through skinttariffs.com lead the way, with 2.06 million active customers joining its services, representing 14.1 per cent growth, taking the provider to a total of 16.75 million subscribers.

O2, also available through skinttariffs.com, remained the biggest provider as it broke through the 20 million barrier, finishing 2007 with 20.13 million subscribers.

Mobile phones are more than just a handset that can be used to make cheap international calls, they also offer diary organisation, media playing and photographic functions.
